I was supposed to do the test drive of a Chrysler Crossfire Thursday but the car was stored for winter. Unless I was a potential buyer that left a good deposit, they would not take it out for a test drive. Hell I wasn't even able to sit inside of it because there was 3 cm between the cars parked next to it! Disappointed, I decided to see something else elsewhere. Enter the 2004 Miata. No points to give since I've tested it for 10 minutes maximum. This is a NA vs NB review and sorry for the lack of pictures but I'm on my phone...
Take the harsh, rude and awaken spirit of the NA Miata and pour whipped cream on it. That's how it felt in short.
Driving: It is QUITE easier on the ears than my NA and you feel that the wheels are big and heavy (an alignment could fix this), but it's buttery smooth. Where I would be killing myself for driving over a pothole and feel that the car would fall apart in my NA, in the NB I'd be more "oh!....ok". The chassis just feels much more solid and the brakes feels better, but the stopping power seems the same as mine. The shifting...take mine that feels metallic, clanky and precise, add padding to make it smoother/quieter and make sure that all the gears including the first one move in with no effort and that you feel a small "bonk" when you get the gear in. That's how the NB feels. The accelerator pedal is a disappointement, it's like the NC...it doesn't feel connected to the engine like the NA is. Now the acceleration, like the NC it goes but it's not as raw as the NA. On the road, it doesn't turn as fast as my NA (again alignement can fix this) but it's smooth and guess what? NO MORE 65 MPH SHIMMY!!!!!
The exterior: I like it, the doors and fenders makes it look widen compared to the NA. But I got nothing else to say about it, except the trunk door that feels smooth and sealed when you close it compared to the NA that feels as solid but is less smooth. Kudos to Mazda for using the license plate lighting as light to see in your trunk at night. Seems like most Miatas I saw have the main trunk light cover broken, even I. Could it create some....fiery deaths???
The interior: Yes...it's much much better, but hold up right there. I hate the center console! The vents are a tad too high, it looks weird. The OEM radio looks awful and is too big. Who the hell decided that the ventilation speed control should be small like a 1 cent?? And what about the damn cup holders on the center console opening up when you shift??? On the positive side, the seats were REALLY comfortable!! I would get them for mine in a heartbeat! The gauges are really beautiful in red too, but I feel that it's missing diversity and they feel smaller than the ones in my NA for some odd reason...The doors are light years ahead compared to the NA. The NA ones feels gutless and make my speakers sound bassless. The NB feels much more upscale when you open and close the door. There's is a noticable weight gain and it doesn't feel empty inside (almost like it's filled with foam at some places.).
The audio: Reviwers were spot on about the exhaust note that felt non-inspiring, but it helps the car quiet down quite a lot! The engine note sounded meh also. It's like mine but neutered. The sound system sounds better than the NA for the bass only! Mine sounds clearer hihihi. But the NB would win hand down with the same mods that I did.
Special note about the engine compartiment: Brilliant placement for about everything. The washing fluid on the top of the manifold is perfect for cold days where having heated up windsheild washer fluid would bring down the damn ice in no time.
My verdict: I still like my NA and I'm staying with it.

I like my NB but I would be equally as happy with an NA R package or M edition. But the NB2's are where its at, you get better headlights and a better center console (trust me it is way better than the NB1's console with a hinge made of plastic that is basically useless. . .). Also the NB2 get the VVT motor so there is that and bigger brakes. Although it looks like you tested a car fitted with 16in wheels you gain lots of feel in the 15 in range and your 65 mph shimmy can be fixed with an accurate roadforce balance and a checking of the roundness of tire and how true your rims are, you got to find out if those motherfuckers are lying to you!
Stick with your NA and turbo the fuck out of it or supercharge it or get crazy and put some xidas on it. . .

I've got an '04 SE edition. Is that one in your picture their "black cherry mica" color? Mine is. I've also got a '99 NB and I recently got new tires for it. One of these days I'd like to switch the 195-50-15s on the '99 with the 205-45-16s on the '04 and see how the handling compares.
The cup holder problem you're talking about is caused by the springs having fallen off. Get a knife with a rounded edge and pry out the window switch, then remove the screws that hold the center console on (two on either side of the front of the console, one under the window switch, one or two in the console compartment), and you'll probably find the springs down under there. You may have to fabricate new posts in the center console for those springs; they were supported by plastic posts that can easily break off.
I bought my '04 used, There's a bushing at the bottom end of the shift lever that was shot, causing the shifting to seem very vague and sloppy. I took the center console off and discovered that both of the rubber boots - there's one that seals the opening at the top of the transmission and a second one on top that seals the interior of the car from the outside world - were torn. So I replaced both boots and the shift lever bushing and shifting gears feels a whole lot better. Unlike the NA transmission, which had the bottom of the shifter isolated from the transmission, the bottom of the NB shifter is in the same housing as the rest of the transmission. This means that when the bottom rubber boot was torn, the inside of my transmission was wide open to the outside world, so every time I drove over a puddle it was possible for water and road dirt to get inside the transmission. So after I fixed the shifter I had the transmission oil changed. However, I was standing there watching when they mechanic drained the old oil and it didn't look dirty, fortunately.

Idrove a few Crossfires, including an SRT-6, when I sold Chryslers. They were terribly disappointing IMO. They all wanted to hild you back. You need to press the accelerator much more than you would think. I always found myself slowing down or (gag) doing the speed limit. Not big on power. I never got to throw one around so maybe the handling makes up for it. I doubt it though. Every Chrysler I have ever driven had loose, dead, disconnected steering. I'm not just bashing here, I DD a Dodge.

This is why I like Miata owners. Quite ressourceful! The switch to the nb is tempting, but from what I felt with the nb2, I'd rock a NC. It's similar imo, except for the gearbox and the seats.

Meh, you are better off going with the FM set up for around a grand. Unless you don't really care and want to get slammed. From what I heard all the bargain setups are over springed and underdamped. The Xidas were kinda a joke, but I would love a set on my car as they seem to be the only shocks out there that can handle the heavy springs and deliver a decent ride. The FCM setups are highly revered as well but I think they are over a grand. You get what you pay for with regards to the Miatas suspension, which is the most important virtue of these cars.
I'm not trying to tell you how to spend your money, but I would hate for you to have buyers remorse and be riding around in a crashy uncomfortable car. There are options out there and you may even get lucky with finding a used setup for a decent price.

Oh, pleasure. Anyway, during the weekend our 1986 Toyota Hilux 4x4 Xtra-Cab's engine stalled while travelling at about 100km/h, but it quickly revved to life few seconds later when we were still moving. The engine temperature gauge showed normal. I wasn't changing the gears when it stalled. Unlike many Opponauts, we maintain our truck and two other cars all the time (new belts, spark plugs, oil, oil filter, antifreeze, oil, and petrol lines, air filter, transmission fluid, everything). It was professionally rebuilt when I bought it about 2 or 3 years ago. What do you think caused it to stall? Oddly, it's still working fine today.

Why the change from super to supreme dad? There's never enough details!
Sees Ron
Sup Ron! Where is Ginny? Better not be with that Harry Pothead...
Did the fuel filter got changed recently? Did it happen when you were on a hill/ was the truck was in an angle while driving? How much gas was in the tank at the time? Low, half, full? If it was low, the fuel pump might be tired or the fuel filter might be clogged. A dirty air flow meter or a mass air flow can cause this too. There could be air that got in the fuel system also, but you would see a small fuel leak if it did most of the time. How was the electronics right before and when it was shut down? Did they turn off?

* Ron laughs * "Ginny? You like that whore? Merlin's beard! Me dad found out that she was a whore and disowned her. My twin brothers Fred and George opened a joke store with franchises that mock her! For two Weasleys, they're making heaps of quids! Harry broke up with Draco the last time I heard from him."
The Hilux gets a full tuneup annually. So yes, I believe the fuel filter got replaced as well. It happened during a road trip (you can read a little about it here ) and the petrol tank was full. The road elevation changes throughout the trip (lots of mountain roads), but we drove on that road many times and it was the first time it happened. The electronics worked before, during, and after the stall. My husband said, "it was really windy when it happened. Does that fall under 'mass air flow can cause this' category?" Do you recommend having my truck looked at? Cost won't be an issue. Thanks and cheers! * kisses Helmut's head *

How dare he chills with Hermione. Hermione must be mine ese, MINE. Don't you agree Ron?
Hum...it could be a small bug with the MAF. I would clean it myself, it's easy and it takes a few minutes, but do it only if it does it again. Where do you maintain the Hilux? Independent garage or the dealership?

* Ron says nervously * "Helmut, do you realise that Harry is right behind you? He's heard everything!"
Ron said, "anyway, yeah, blimey, I sounded like an idiot when I asked him to see his Danger High Voltage scar. I looked like this."
We took our truck to our independent mechanic for a checkup yesterday. After explaining the situation, the mechanic asked us, "did you show your son how to refill the tank?" My husband and I exchanged nervous looks and nodded. The mechanic nodded, walked to the back of the truck, opened the fuel door, and pointed, "there's your problem." The cap was loose, and the air got in. The mechanic tightened the cap and revved the engine to get rid of any remaining air. Nakita cried in horror, thinking he broke our truck. Cute.

Nakita is 100cm (about 40in) tall. Ivan lifted him when we showed him how to refill the tank. We forgot to tighten the cap before we hit the road.
Well, thank you for your help, here… * hands over keys * Look out your window, son! We bought you a 1991 Mazda Miata Speedster Concept!

Get out, go back to school right now before you become like Hairy Pothead there and snort cocaine out of snow by using his weird magic and then be knocked the fuck out by me seconds later. Bring that coke head with you also plz...he's dirtying my room with his presence.

Ron said, "I ditched Hogwarts with my brothers so I can see you. Alfalfa was my BFF, but he mysteriously disappeared after visiting you. I had to see for myself!" * Ron clings onto Helmut, mumbles through mouth full of sweets * "I like you!"
Helmut, son, no swearing in our house! * slaps across Helmut's face *
I swear we didn't buy the Miata Speedster Concept from that eBay seller in Taiwan. I don't kno—* gets interrupted by Ron * Ron said, "the engine is covered with an invisibility cloak to prevent theft. It's there!"

Touches his face, looks at Zorro Sry dad, I won't swear anymore I promise. Looks at Ron I hate slackers Ron. You won't win me if you don't educate yourself, this is why I'm in love with Hermione, she's a brainiac with good looks....you...you're a slacker and I don't see a future with a slacker. Strickland from Back to the Future would agree with my thinking. Removes the invisibility cloak from the engine bay .....what is this? All I see is clay! You think this is a game Ron?? You think this is funny??? Don't try me with "The engine looks like clay for protection" it doesn't start nor go forward or backwards!

* Ron grumbles * "But some slackers became rich and famous! Look at Zorro and Ivan! They started their bakery business when they were in college. Well, whatever! Oi, look who's here!"
* Errol dies, Ron shrugs * "I was hoping this day would come, so, me mum can get me a better owl. I have an enchanted Ford Anglia 105E that can fly. Want me to take you to Hermione at Hogwarts? We can stop at a Mazda mechanic to pick up an engine for your new Miata. Let's go!"
Master Nakita has a question for you, Helmut. "Have you ever felt an earthquake?" (we're teaching him about how Earth changes like earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, etc.)

Really!? Who's the one that started on Jalopnik/Oppo first?

I used to chill on Jalopnik in 2011 or 2012. (That place is a dump today.) Atte came in when Oppo launched last year. I'm not an active commenter here.

You should be! Oppo is wayyyy more fun than Jalopnik. It's like a second family.

There's a lot of dicks here, and they don't like me because of something I did on Jalopnik some three years ago. Yeah, talk about holding grudges and being stuck in the past.

Yeah sure, well, those dicks came from Jalopnik. I don't know what's their problem. Penile fracture?

I trolled Jalopnik almost all the time, but this one was my personal favorite. Jalopnik had a QOTD about Matchbox cars, but everyone posted a picture of a Hot Wheels car. I commented on all of them saying it's not a Matchbox. On an AOTD on the following day, the author used a picture of a Hot Wheels car on purpose to piss me off. I raged and quit. LOL. Yeah, people are still mad at me about it.

Yeah, well, I dunno why the mods on Oppo gave me a hard time because of that when there are a lot of trolls here now.

I gave them a chance, but they blew it before I can formally join Oppo. Gamecat gave me a chance because he's the only good one out of 29 mods here.

Yeah well, it's a mistake to have too many mods.
